Eyes and ears!

July 12, 2012

More interesting things are turning up on Nancy, the Edmontosaurus. This morning, a volunteer named Saul found and prepared a section of the sclerotic ring, an array of thin, platy bones that encloses the eyeball. What makes this rare find all the more interesting is that it turned up not in the orbit, where one might expect to find it, but in the upper temporal opening behind the orbit! Good thing Saul has a great eye for detail.

This is what remains of the sclerotic ring from Nancy’s left eye.

Another remarkable discovery is the stapes. This long, thin bone from the ear region is very delicate and rarely preserved.

Have you ever seen or heard anything so interesting?
